Viking puts state on notice, Siuslaw golf is back

May 20, 2022 - Freshman golfer Ryan Klampe provided a fitting end to a very successful return to golf for Siuslaw High by finishing sixth out of 58 golfers at the 2022 OSAA 4A Boys Golf State Championships. He qualified as an individual after winning the Special District 3 title on May 10.

The 4A state championships were held at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks. Klampe was the only golfer from Siuslaw at the tournament.

Klampe had a good day May 16, the first day of the tournament. He birdied hole #5 and scored 37 (+1) through the first nine holes.

After a little trouble with two double bogies to end the round, Klampe finished day one with a score of 79 (+7).

Klampe was tied for seventh after the first day. Elliot Lee of Tillamook, Ty Beyer of Woodburn and Ryoma Lane of Valley Catholic were tied for first after the first day, all with scores of 73 (+1).

Klampe was even better on day two. He parred the first 11 holes to start the day and finished with an 18-hole score of 75 (+3). That gave Klampe a two-day total of 154, which was enough to tie him with fellow freshman Massimo Cereghino of Molalla for sixth place out of the 58 golfers in the tournament.

Lee, a junior from Tillamook, scored 73/75-148 (+4) to win the individual state championship. Beyer, also a junior, [73/77-150 (+6)] was second. Seaside senior Carson Kawasoe [77/74-151 (+7)] was third.

Klampe led the tournament in holes parred, with 26 out of 36 holes. He was tied for second in average score on par 4’s. Klampe and Aaron Brown of Banks both averaged 4.2 on par 4’s, just behind Beyer who led the tournament with an average par 4 score of 4.05.

The team from Banks, the host school, won the team title with a five-golfer combined score of 335/326-661 (+85) for the two days. Valley Catholic of Beaverton [329/335-664 (+88)] and Baker/Powder Valley [335/329-664 (+88)] were tied for second place.
