June 17, 2020 — Florence ORganizes (FOR) will be sponsoring a family friendly Juneteenth (Freedom Day) Celebration on Friday, June 19, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Florence United Methodist Church, 333 Kingwood St. This will be followed by a march from 1 to 2 pm. People gather in support of Black Lives across the nation and in remembrance of the end of slavery in our country.
FOR will gather at noon for celebrating and a rally. People are asked bring a chair and their own picnic food. There are nearby restaurants that provide takeout meals, including Los Compadres, Hukilau and Dairy Queen.
People should feel free to bring noisemakers — rattles, tambourines, drums, etc. — to add to the festivities. FOR will provide recorded music and chalk for sidewalk art.
At 12:30 p.m. will be the Juneteenth rally with an invocation, followed by speakers.
The Juneteenth march will begin at 1 p.m. The route will go from the church along Highway 101 north to Rhododendron, then cross to go south on 101 to City Hall, down Maple Street to Bay Street and west to Kingwood Street, back to the church.
Folks that don’t want to or cannot walk that distance are encouraged to sit along the route with a sign of support.
FOR is planning Juneteenth as a peaceful, positive event.
According to organizers, “We are here to build community and all are welcome. We will practice safety at all times. Please wear a mask and practice safe social distancing.”
