BGCWLC sends three kids to Redmond tourney

Feb. 10, 2022 - For the first time, Boys and Girls Club of Western Lane County (BGCWLC) offered wrestling to children in kindergarten through fifth grade — and the season was a huge success.

Putting a cap on that successful season was a trip to Redmond Jan. 28-29 for three young wrestlers, who competed at the Oregon Wrestling Association (OWA) Folkstyle State Championships.

Top finisher from the BGCWLC team was Mapleton kindergartener Vance Kimble who, after beating a wrestlers from Redmond then Albany, claimed the 6U 53-pound championship.

According to his mom Abbie, this was Vance’s first year wrestling, but he came into the season with a few years of jujitsu under his belt. When he’s not on the mat he likes to do things outside, like ride bikes, play with friends or go swimming.

Also competing at the event for BGCWLC were Emree Christensen and Hayleigh Ortiz. Each won a match at the event.
