Updated schedules for area high school winter sports teams

Jan. 25, 2022 — The fight to keep students safe while also keep them on the court continues as Mapleton and Siuslaw high schools were forced to cancel, postpone and reschedule many sporting events over the past few days.

On Sunday afternoon, Siuslaw School District Superintendent Andy Grzeskowiak sent an email to parents indicating exposure to COVID-19 continues amongst SHS athletes.

“Most cases are being reported as positive from laboratory or at-home tests — this is the majority of case count reports (82% from lab or at-home tests in that same time period),” said Grzeskowiak. “School staff are screening out others that do show with symptoms at school with a BinaxNOW test.”

Grzeskowiak did mention a positive note in that exposure doesn’t seem to be happening in actual school.

“The positive here is that classroom and general lunchroom settings are not showing transmission,” said Grzeskowiak. “COVID positive exposure contacts at the high school are mainly from students that travel together for an off-campus lunch.”

Grzeskowiak said vigorous testing would continue this week.

All four of Mapleton and Siuslaw’s basketball teams and SHS’s wrestling and cheer teams have been forced to make numerous changes to their remaining schedules. Below are updated schedules for the rest of the season for all six teams.
