Vikings win Academic All-State Award

June 3, 2022 — The accolades keep rolling in for the Siuslaw golf program in its first year of play in over a decade.

The Viking girls golfers have earned the OnPoint Community Credit Union Academic All-State Award.

SHS topped the 4A/3A/2A/1A division with a team grade point average of 3.89, just edging North Valley of Grants Pass, whose team GPA was 3.88.

The Siuslaw girls golf team was made up of freshmen Darcy Edmond and Rhianna Lane, juniors Itziar Carro and Gabi Jarmon and seniors Zoe Alberty and Hayden Muller.

Also earning honors was the Siuslaw girls track and field team, who was ranked fourth in the 4A division with a 3.75 team GPA.

Two other groups of Vikings also earned fourth place rankings: band (3.41) and choir (3.17).

The boys track and field team was sixth with a GPA of 3.52.

Also receiving honors for having a 3.00 or above team GPA were the softball (3.29) and baseball teams (3.00).

Every season, schools and activities departments submit academic information for the Academic All-State Program. Each member of a winning team receives a commemorative decal and a certificate. Members of the top 10 schools in each activity of each classification receive additional recognition and the top school receives a plaque in honor of its team.

The Academic All-State Award is part of OnPoint’s title sponsorship of the Oregon high school state championships. The partnership builds on our commitment to strengthening local education by supporting students, schools and educators.

“OnPoint’s commitment to education made the organization an ideal partner for OSAA,” said Peter Weber, OSAA Executive Director. “Together, we are so proud of what the winners of the Academic All-State Award have accomplished and can’t wait to see what their future holds.”

OnPoint was founded by 16 schoolteachers in 1932 and it honors those roots in a variety of ways, including the OnPoint Prize for Excellence in Education. In addition to this annual award recognizing educators and schools for excellence in education, OnPoint is also the title sponsor of the OSAA Scholar Program. This program recognizes all graduating seniors who have achieved a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA and earned a varsity letter in an OSAA-sanctioned activity at any point in their high school career. OnPoint and the OSAA will award college grants to six of these qualifying students.
