Ceremonies honor POW/MIA National Recognition Day

Sept. 22, 2018 — Florence-area groups came together yesterday to acknowledge POW/MIA National Recognition Day.

On Friday morning, members of Florence Elks Lodge #1858 held a ceremony to acknowledge prisoners of war (POW) and missing in action (MIA) personnel and the sacrifices made by servicemen and their families when a loved one is lost in an overseas conflict.

At 2 p.m., veterans’ groups American Legion Post 59, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3232 and The Band of Brothers held a ceremony at Veteran’s Memorial Park on Bay Street in Historic Old Town Florence.

POW/MIA recognition is observed on the third Friday in September each year. This observance is one of six days throughout the year that U.S. Congress has mandated the flying of the National League of Families’ POW/MIA flag. The others are Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day.
